On 15th October, 2003, China launched its first manned spacecraft into space. The spacecraft was called “Shenzhou 5”, Yang Liwei, Chian’s first astronaut, was 38 years old then. The successful flight marked a milestone in China’s space project. China became the third country in the world to be able to independently carry out manned space flights.

1. The first artificial satellite was launched into space on 4th October in 1957. it was called “Sputnik” and it was made by the USSR. Launching the first artificial satellite “ Sputnik” marked the very begging of Space Age not only in Russia but also on over the world.
2. On 3rd November in 1957, the USSR launched Sputnik 2 which carried the first living being in space. This was a dog named Laika.
3. Yuri Gagarin- a Russian cosmonaut- became the first human in space when Russia launched Vostok 1 on 12th April in 1961. the 27-year-old cosmonaut ahd a 108 minutes flight into space.
4. Valentina Tereshkova lifted off into the space on 15th June in 1963. she became the first woman flew into space.
5. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were the first humans to set foot on the moon on 20th July in 1969. They were American astronauts.
6. On 23rd July in 1980, Pham Tuan and V.V.Gorbotko, a Russian cosmonaut, flew into space and they stayed 8 days in orbit. Pham Tuan was the first Vietnamese in space.
7. John Glenn- an American astronaut- became the oddest human ever to fly into space at the age of 77. his flight was on 29th October in 1998.
8. The first Chinese astronaut flew into space on 15th October in 2003 was Yang Liwei. A 38-year-old astronaut spent 21 hours in space.
